The Transition Of YABATECH - 1 month ago

As we gather to contemplate the changes sweeping through our beloved institutions, my heart aches with both hope and trepidation. The Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, has confirmed that the journey towards becoming a full-fledged university is well underway. While such advancements can spark excitement in the hearts of the younger generation, I am compelled to wonder, at what cost does this development come?

Dr. Abdul recently spoke at a press briefing about the impending 37th convocation ceremony, a momentous occasion that should remind us all of the values we hold dear. He mentioned that the National Assembly and the Presidency are diligently working on the final details of this significant transformation. But what should we expect from this change? Will it truly elevate our children’s education, or will it lead to a dilution of the core values that have always defined us?

Earlier this year, we witnessed the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, visiting YABATECH, pledging the Federal Government's support for this elevation. Dr. Abdul spoke with pride, highlighting the college’s impressive roster of over 200 doctorate degree holders among the faculty and the facilities tailored for a university environment. “We have done what is expected of us,” Dr. Abdul reassured us.

As we approach the convocation, we find solace in the accomplishments of 8,654 graduates, among whom are shining stars like Ani Faith Ada, who achieved a remarkable CGPA of 3.90.The upcoming ceremony will also feature a lecture by the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, discussing “Entrepreneurship Development in the Digital Age.”

During this gathering, YABATECH will honor three distinguished Nigerians with the prestigious Fellowship Award, recognizing their contributions to our nation. While it is essential to celebrate achievements, let us also reflect on the kind of leadership we wish to emulate, one that embodies dedication, integrity, and genuine service to society.

As we welcome these eminent figures, let us not lose sight of the values that define us as a community. The stories of our past should serve not only as a source of pride but also as a solemn reminder to guide our future choices. Change is inevitable, but it is our responsibility to ensure that progress does not come at the expense of our moral compass.
