Harry Maguire has signed a new contract with Manchester United that runs until June 2027, with an option to extend to 2028, confirming his continued presence at Old Trafford for up to eight seasons.
The agreement replaces a deal that was approaching its end and represents a clear decision by the club to retain a player who has experienced both sustained criticism and periods of strong form since joining from Leicester City for £80 million.
Maguire characterised the contract as a significant step in his career and highlighted the personal significance of playing for a club with a high level of global scrutiny. He framed the extension as a continuation of his existing role rather than a change in status.
He referred to what he sees as positive momentum within the current squad, citing a mix of younger and more experienced players and expressing the view that the team is positioned to compete more consistently for major trophies. He stated that the objectives of the playing group and club leadership are aligned around that aim.
Director of football Jason Wilcox outlined the club’s rationale for the extension by focusing on Maguire’s mentality, resilience and professionalism. Wilcox identified Maguire as a key influence in a relatively young squad and as a primary leadership figure in the dressing room.
On the pitch, Maguire’s time at United has included both extended periods of scrutiny and stretches of stable, effective performances. Under manager Michael Carrick, his recent displays have coincided with an improvement in the team’s defensive record, with his aerial ability and composure cited as contributing factors.
At international level, his club form has led to a recall to the England squad for upcoming fixtures against Uruguay and Japan, indicating that he remains a preferred option for national team selection.
By finalising this contract, Manchester United are formally committing to Maguire as a core defensive and leadership component in the medium term, integrating his experience into the next phase of the club’s competitive rebuild.
