Australia’s Parliament has passed the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024, mandating that “age-restricted social media platforms” must take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under 16 from holding accounts, a move framed as putting the onus on technology companies rather than parents.
The law becomes effective 10 December 2025, after a transition period. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter) and others must implement ageassurance or age-verification measures and could face civil penalties if they fail to act.
