A Dream That Began Long Before I Understood It. Every person has a dream that becomes a part of who they are. For some, it is becoming a doctor or an engineer. For others, it is building a successful business or changing the world through technology. For me, it was different. My greatest dream was to become an officer in the Nigerian military and, one day, a fighter pilot. This dream did not appear overnight. It grew with me.As a child, I admired the courage, discipline, and commitment of military officers. Whenever I saw soldiers standing proudly in their uniforms, I saw more than people carrying out their duties—I saw men and women who had dedicated their lives to protecting others. I wanted to become one of them. That dream became my motivation. Every time I imagined my future, I pictured myself wearing the uniform with pride, serving my country, and making my family proud. It wasn't about fame or recognition. It was about purpose.Preparing for the OpportunityDreams are beautiful, but they also require preparation. As I grew older, I learned about the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the opportunity it offered to young Nigerians who desired to become military officers. I knew the journey would not be easy, but I was willing to give everything I had.I prepared myself physically, mentally, and emotionally. I prayed constantly, believing that God would open the door if it was His will. Like every young person chasing a dream, I imagined the day I would receive the news that I had been selected. That hope carried me through every stage of preparation. Finally, the day of the screening arrived.Standing among hundreds of other applicants, I felt excited and nervous at the same time. Everyone there carried a dream. Everyone believed they had a chance.I was one of them. The News I Never Wanted to HearThe screening process tested every candidate. It demanded discipline, determination, and resilience.I gave my best. Then came the announcement.I was not selected. The reason was difficult to accept. I did not meet some of the required physical standards, including height and physical strength. For a few moments, everything became silent. It felt as though the future I had imagined for years disappeared in front of my eyes. The pain became even greater because this was not my first attempt. I had faced disappointment before, and I had returned with even more determination, believing that this time things would be different. But they weren't.Walking away from that experience was one of the hardest moments of my life.Wrestling With DisappointmentAfter returning home, I asked myself questions that many people ask after experiencing failure."Why did this happen?""Did I not prepare enough?""Was this dream over?""Had God forgotten me?"Those questions stayed in my mind for weeks.Although I was studying Mass Communication at university, my heart still longed for military service. I attended lectures, completed assignments, and continued with school life, but there was still a part of me wondering what could have been.Disappointment has a way of making us doubt ourselves. It whispers that we are not good enough. It convinces us that one rejection defines our future. For a while, I listened to those whispers. But they were wrong.Finding Strength Through FaithOne of the greatest blessings during that difficult season was my Christian faith. There were days when I had no words left to pray. Instead, I simply opened my Bible. One verse became my anchor:"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."— Jeremiah 29:11 (New International Version, NIV)At first, I struggled to believe those words. How could there still be hope when my biggest dream had fallen apart? But as time passed, I realized something important.God's plans are not always the same as our plans.Sometimes the answer is "yes."Sometimes it is "wait."Sometimes it is "not this way."Another passage also encouraged me during that season:"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."— Proverbs 3:5–6 (New International Version, NIV)Those verses did not immediately remove my disappointment, but they gave me something just as valuable—hope.Discovering That Life Has More Than One Path.
As weeks turned into months, I slowly began to see opportunities I had overlooked before.I realized that while one door had closed, many others remained open.Instead of sitting in regret, I decided to grow.I invested time in learning digital skills.I explored freelancing and content creation.I began planning to build a YouTube channel where I could share gospel messages, encouragement, and glimpses of everyday life. These new opportunities did not replace my original dream.Instead, they reminded me that purpose is not limited to one career or one opportunity.
Sometimes we become so focused on one destination that we forget there are many roads capable of leading us toward a meaningful life.
Lessons Rejection Taught MeLooking back today, I can honestly say that rejection became one of my greatest teachers.
It taught me that patience is not passive—it is strength.
It taught me that resilience means getting back up even when you have every reason to stay down.
It taught me that our identity should never depend on one examination, one interview, or one selection list.
Most importantly, it taught me that failure does not have the final word. Our response to failure does. Many successful people experienced rejection before achieving greatness. Some failed entrance examinations. Some lost scholarships. Some were told they would never succeed.Yet those same people eventually built remarkable lives because they refused to quit.Their stories remind me that rejection is often part of success, not the opposite of it.To Anyone Who Is Hurting Tod
