The First Friend I Made In University... And How It Ended - 1wk ago

“I thought we'd be friends forever. I was wrong.”

The first day I stepped onto campus, I knew absolutely nobody.

Everyone seemed to have someone. Some came with friends from secondary school. Others quickly found people to laugh with while waiting for registration. I stood there pretending to check my phone, hoping I didn't look as nervous as I felt.

Then someone walked up to me.

"Is this where we're supposed to submit these forms?" they asked.

I laughed because I had been wondering the exact same thing.

Neither of us knew where we were going, but somehow we decided to figure it out together.

That one conversation turned into everything.

We attended orientation side by side, searched for lecture halls together, complained about endless queues, and got lost on campus more times than we could count. Before long, people assumed we'd known each other for years.

University suddenly felt less scary because I wasn't facing it alone.

There were late-night calls before exams.

Shared lecture notes.

Random walks after classes.

The "Have you eaten?" messages.

The little moments that seemed ordinary back then but became some of my favorite memories.

I honestly believed we'd still be laughing about those days years after graduation.

But life has a funny way of changing people.

As semesters passed, our schedules became different. New friends came into our lives. Priorities changed. We still greeted each other, but the long conversations became short ones. The daily check-ins became birthday messages. Eventually, even those stopped.

There wasn't a fight.

No betrayal.

No dramatic ending.

Just two people slowly growing in different directions.

For a long time, I wondered if friendships were supposed to last forever.

Now I think some people come into our lives for a season. They help us survive a chapter we couldn't have faced alone, and even if the friendship fades, the memories never do.

Sometimes I still think about that nervous first day on campus.

If we hadn't started that awkward conversation, my university experience would have been completely different.

So wherever that first friend is today, I hope life has been kind to them.

Some friendships don't last forever.

But that doesn't make them any less meaningful.
