Carlo Ancelotti’s Son Davide Takes Lille Hot Seat - 2 days ago

Davide Ancelotti has been appointed head coach of Lille, marking a significant step in the career of the highly regarded assistant and extending one of football’s most famous dynasties into Ligue 1.

Lille confirmed that Ancelotti has signed a two-year contract, moving into the role a week after the departure of Bruno Genesio. The French club, renowned for developing talent and regularly qualifying for European competitions, has turned to the 36-year-old in a bid to consolidate its status among France’s elite.

Ancelotti arrives with a growing reputation built largely in the shadows of his father, Carlo Ancelotti, under whom he has worked at several top clubs and with the Brazil national team. Lille did not immediately clarify whether he will step away from his duties on Brazil’s coaching staff before the upcoming World Cup, but his appointment underlines the club’s confidence in his ability to manage both high expectations and a demanding schedule.

This will be his second spell as a head coach after a six-month stint at Brazilian side Botafogo, where he was praised for his tactical organisation and calm authority on the touchline. Those who have worked with him describe a coach who blends his father’s famed man-management skills with a more data-driven, modern approach to training and match preparation.

“I’m very proud and happy. It’s an honour to represent Lille,” Ancelotti said at his unveiling, stressing that the project in northern France matched his own ambitions. He described Lille as a “serious, ambitious, competitive club” that offers the platform to compete regularly in Europe.

Lille finished third in Ligue 1 last season, securing a place in the Champions League and underlining the scale of the task facing their new coach. He will be expected not only to navigate the qualifying rounds and group stage but also to keep the team competitive domestically against the financial might of Paris Saint-Germain and the resurgence of rivals such as Monaco and Marseille.

The new Ligue 1 campaign is set to begin in late August, giving Ancelotti a short window to stamp his identity on the squad, oversee summer recruitment and convince supporters that Lille’s future is safe in the hands of the next generation of the Ancelotti family.
