Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, says only a competent leader who demonstrates clear loyalty to the people and interests of Oyo State will receive his backing to succeed him as governor in 2027.
Speaking at the 12th Omituntun Annual Ramadan Public Lecture in Ibadan, Makinde disclosed that his experience with colleagues who regretted supporting successors loyal only to them had shaped his resolve.
He explained that he would not anoint anyone on the basis of personal allegiance, stressing that the next governor must be committed to consolidating peace and development across the state.
Makinde linked his own record in office to what he described as unwavering loyalty to Oyo people, citing the payment of over N25 billion in inherited gratuity arrears and an increase in monthly gratuity disbursement from N1 billion to N3 billion. His target, he said, is to ensure that no retiree is owed gratuity by the end of his tenure in May 2027.
The governor also highlighted the ongoing upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, to international status, noting that the state is working towards airlifting Hajj pilgrims directly from the facility in 2026.
Makinde used the occasion to appreciate the Muslim community for what he called their crucial role in sustaining peace and stability in Oyo State. He said the relative calm enjoyed since 2019 could not have been achieved without their prayers and cooperation.
He noted that the Omituntun Ramadan Lecture predates his administration and pledged to continue supporting it even after leaving office, describing it as a vital platform for engaging citizens.
To commemorate the 12th edition of the lecture, Makinde announced the donation of seven buses to selected mosques across the state’s geopolitical zones to aid Islamic activities. He also presented a sport utility vehicle to the guest lecturer, Sheikh Jamiu Ajadi Sanusi, popularly known as Ami Olohun, in recognition of his sermon and contributions.
In his lecture on the theme “Contentment,” Sheikh Sanusi praised the developmental strides of the Makinde administration but urged the governor to remain vigilant against mischief-makers. He called on residents to embrace contentment and ensure that religion is not used to fuel conflict.
Other speakers, including former governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, and prominent Islamic and political leaders, commended Makinde for sustaining the annual programme and for his support for the Muslim community.
