Wrestling champion John Cena has announced his plans to retire from professional wrestling in 2025, marking the end of his illustrious two-decade career. The 16-time WWE world champion made the emotional announcement to a packed stadium of World Wrestling Entertainment fans in Toronto, Canada. Despite the crowd's audible disappointment, Cena promised an unforgettable farewell tour, complete with numerous dates and an epic final match, ensuring fans that he will remain connected to the wrestling franchise that catapulted him to fame.
"Thank you so much for letting me play in the house that you built for so many years," Cena expressed to the enthusiastic audience during WWE Money in the Bank in Toronto. He revealed that his final wrestling appearances will include the 2025 Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas.
Reflecting on his career, Cena shared, "I’ve been in the WWE for over two decades, and in that time, I’ve seen incredible waves of prosperity like we got right now. WWE is the hottest ticket in town, no doubt, but I have also seen true hardship, that’s when no one knows your name, nobody wants to be your friend and only the most dedicated and hardcore fans stand by your side."
Cena, known for his iconic catchphrase “You can’t see me,” also mentioned his excitement about being involved when WWE's Raw transitions to Netflix in January.
During a press conference following the event, Cena told reporters that he feels physically "at my end" but emphasized that this does not mean he needs to distance himself from the sport he loves. Since debuting in 2002, Cena has been a pivotal figure in the wrestling world. However, starting in 2018, he took on a more part-time role in WWE to pursue his burgeoning movie career.
Cena has since starred in major films such as “Blockers” and “The Suicide Squad,” and has made notable appearances in the “Fast & Furious” franchise. Most recently, he appeared in the comedy thriller “Argylle” and the box office hit “Barbie.”
As Cena prepares to step away from the ring, he leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable moments and a lasting impact on both the wrestling and entertainment industries.
