Nursing Student Found Dead In Anambra Apartment, Landlord Arrested - 5 hours ago

A 23-year-old nursing student, Chiamaka Chilaka, has been found dead in her rented apartment in Uruezeani, Alor, in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, sparking outrage and calls for justice.

Chiamaka, an ND II student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, and a native of Isingu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, was reportedly discovered lifeless by neighbours after returning from a church service. Her death has since trended across social media, where a viral video showed a cleric believed to be close to her, weeping and crying out “My daughter, my daughter” as sympathisers gathered at the scene.

In the video and in accounts shared by students and residents, the landlord of the compound was accused of persistently making unwanted advances toward the young woman, which she allegedly rebuffed. Witnesses claimed she was last seen in a heated argument with him shortly before she was found dead.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and announced that the landlord has been arrested. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, ordered a full-scale investigation after the case was transferred from the Nnobi Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka.

According to the police, operatives who visited the apartment observed visible injuries on Chiamaka’s body, including a deep cut on her thigh, other marks of violence and blood stains in the room, all suggesting possible foul play. Her body has been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy as detectives work to establish the exact cause of death.

Ikenga stated that the landlord is in custody and undergoing interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation. The command assured the public that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness and pledged that anyone found culpable will face prosecution.

The police also appealed to students, neighbours and members of the public who may have useful information about Chiamaka’s last movements or previous incidents in the compound to come forward and assist investigators, promising that all credible leads will be pursued and that justice will be served.
